About Gematria

Gematria is an ancient alphanumeric code of assigning numerical value to a name, word or phrase in the belief that words or phrases with identical numerical values bear some relationship to each other or bear some relation to the number itself. It is one of several methods used for the purpose of gaining insight into sacred texts and hidden correspondences.

At its heart, gematria rests on a simple premise: letters have numbers, and numbers carry meaning. Every word, every name, every phrase becomes a numerical signature — and when two phrases share the same signature, tradition holds that they share a hidden bond, a resonance that transcends ordinary language.

This practice appears across many cultures. In Hebrew tradition it is called gematria (גמטריא), used by Kabbalists to decode the Torah. Ancient Greeks practiced isopsephy (ἰσοψηφία), assigning values to Greek letters. Similar systems appear in Arabic abjad numerals and even early Latin mysticism.

In modern esoteric study, gematria has been extended to the English alphabet through several distinct cipher systems — each illuminating different facets of a word's numerical nature.
